3rd Grade Girls 2018-19

Team Highlights

The 3/4 grade Legends capped an exciting season of growth with a playoff victory in overtime to finish in 2nd place out of 7 teams in the Moshannon Valley YMCA Winter League. It was a season of great accomplishment for a team in a 4th grade league that was made up of only a single 4th grader, two second graders and seven third graders. This team played 2 non-conference games, 2 scrimmages, a 10 game regular season, a March Madness Tournament and 2 playoff games for their winter season. They finished at 8-8-1. The Legends steadily improved, winning their last two games of the regular season to finish 6-4 and take 3rd seed in a 7 team league. The team won a thrilling 22-20 overtime game over a talented Huntingdon team to make the Championship game, ultimately finishing in second place. They qualified for the Final Four in their first ever tournament.

Mira completed her first year as a Legend.

Natalie Huggins transitioned from post to guard as the season progressed and was the primary inbounder. Natalie became a strong help defender using her size to disrupt drives to the basket and became more sure handed as the season went on. She had 5 rebounds in the two playoff games. Scored a huge basket in a victory in the Juniata Valley YMCA March Madness.

Rainey “Megawatt” Walker bought high energy to every game, playing all three guard positions. Was third on the team in scoring with 30 points and led the team in assists with 8. She also finished 5th on the team with 29 rebounds, 4th with 26 steals and 2nd with 7 blocked shots. Her biggest moments came in the semi-final victory when she ran point for the last five minutes of regulation and OT and scored 4 points down the stretch.

Mira Coble had a stellar first season playing both post and guard. She was second on the team in assists with 6, 4th in rebounds with 52, 4th on the team in steals with 26 and 2nd in scoring with 50 points. Developed into a strong ball handler with both hands. Had the game winning basket in the semi-final win in which she had 4 points and 6 rebounds. Had 10 points in victory over the Hot Shots.

Sarah “Batman” Mellott played a dynamic point guard on both ends of the floor. She led the team in scoring, topping the century mark with 110 points. She also led the team in steals (73), blocked shots (17) and was third in rebounds (56). Scored in double digits five times, including season high 14. Had 10 points in huge semi-final win in playoffs. Sarah started to use both side of the court consistently as the year progressed and dazzled with her behind the back moves.

Victoria Witmer played all three guard positions and used both the left and right side of the court. She was a sure handed defender grabbing 14 steals and 16 rebounds. She also handed out 5 assists for fourth best on the team. Had an assist and 3 rebounds in the semi-final win. Had 4 second half points in exciting tie at the JMC leading the team in a 9 point comeback. Made first lefty layup for the team.

Ruby Weight made steady progress during the season and became a force on the inside. Ruby developed her boxing out technique and helped seal the inside for rebounds. She was also an aggressive help defender. Had 2 rebounds in a victory over the Hot Shots and a particularly strong defensive game against Tyrone in a tough loss.

2017-18

Sarah “Batman” Mellot played up two years, competing on a 5th grade team as a third grader. Batman played all three guard positions, increasing her time at point guard as the season progressed. Batman was an aggressive defender and capable ball handler.

Batman was second on the team with 20 steals, including a career high 6 against Clearfield. She also had 5 assists and 2 blocked shots on the season. Her biggest contributions came as a disruptive defender that constantly challenged opposing players, causing turnovers.

Deseray Mobley

Deseray completed her first year as a Legend.

Deseray Mobley played post and guard and bought speed and aggression to the floor. She led the team in rebounds with 58, was second in steals with 54 and was tied for third in scoring with 29 points. Led the team with 7 made free throws shooting 44% from the line. Had 10 rebounds in semi-final win. Had 11 points in victory over PO.

Nia Mobley

Nia finished her first year as a Legend.

2018-19

Nia Mobley brought an element of toughness to the team. She had a nose for the ball and was a tough defender. She grabbed 11 steals and 8 rebounds and had 2 assists. Her energy was contagious. Best game was the championship in which she and 2 steals and 2 rebounds against a big Tyrone team.

Ally Swauger played post and was a big presence in the paint on offense and defense. She was 4th on the team in scoring with 29 points, second in rebounding with 57 and third in steals with 28. Ally ran the pick and roll very effectively and was very active on defense. Game high was 6 points. Grabbed the final rebound to clinch the semi-final victory. Led the team in offensive rebounds with 39.

Stella Gallagher played post and created a lot of problems for the opposing offenses with her activity. She was tenacious on the boards and defense grabbing 7 steals and tipping many passes. She saved her best games for down the stretch. She had 3 steals in the semi-final victory and had 1 more in the championship game.
